Exporting to Explo

Overview

In order to make a firing script, you need to configure your launch positions with specifications of your firing system. For instructions, please see the Export Overview section. When configuring your launch positions for the Explo firing system boxes, use integers from 1 to 50 for the module addresses (boxes); specify the first pin (port) is 1, and number of pins is 70. Once you are ready to export your firing script, click the "File > Export firing script > Explo" menu item.

If you have a sound track, you should download into your Explo system the same mp3 file that you uploaded into Finale. The name of that file will be specified in the exported Explo script. Finale assumes it is an mp3 file.

Example Script

The following two files are an example show file that you can load into Finale, and the corresponding exported script for Explo. More explanation of the examples is provided in the Export Examples section.

Understanding the Explo Format

The Explo format consists of three header rows, followed by the firing rows, sorted by break time (effect time). The header rows are a comment row, a row containing the filename of the sound track, and a row containing the titles of the firing row fields. The firing row fields indicate the box and port number of the shot, in addition to timing information, the effect description, and other parameters. Since each firing row represents only a single effect type, it may require multiple firing rows to represent all of the effects ignited from a single box and port number. Thus some firing rows may have the same box and port number. However, the firing rows do contain a quantity field, so if a shot contains multiple devices of the same type and angle, such as a chain of devices, all the devices can be represented on the same row.

Character Set And Delimiters

The exported script uses the full 8-bit extended ASCII character set, to accommodate German characters and others. The fields in the firing rows are separated by tab characters. Special characters like double quotes are not escaped, so beware if you attempt to load the format into Excel. Lines are terminated with a single newline character (0x0A). A special delimiter firing row is included at the end of the script to indicate the end of the file. The fields in the delimiter row are empty except the time field, which duplicates the time of previous row, and the effect description field, which contains the word "Ende".

The Fields in Each Row

The Explo script format includes the following fields in the firing rows, which Finale fills as indicated:

  • Box/Nr The module (box) and pin (post) number of the shot.
  • Explozeit The break time of the shot, in the format 00:00.00.
  • Abstand Zündzeit The delay to the next firing row, in the format 00:00.00.
  • Effektbezeichnung The effect description.
  • Stz. The prefire time, in the format 0,0 (comma decimal point).
  • Efz. The duration of the effect. Finale writes the value 5 as the duration.
  • Efg. The effect category. Finale leaves this field blank.
  • Stop Finale leaves this field blank.
  • Stk. Quantity. Finale writes the total number of devices represented by the firing row.
  • Beschreibung Comment. Finale writes a graphic indicating the angles of the shots, such as ///.
  • Position Finale leaves this field blank.
  • Steighöhe Finale leaves this field blank.
  • Größe Finale leaves this field blank.
  • Etk. Number of labels to print. Finale writes the total number of devices, same as "Stk." field.
  • Effekttop Finale leaves this field blank.
  • Gruppe Finale leaves this field blank.
  • Winkel Angle. Finale writes the shot angle, followed by the degrees character, e.g., 0°.
  • Pos. Launch position.
  • (no name) Finale leaves this field blank.
